![]() In 1859 Asprey absorbed Edwards, an award winning maker of dressing cases and holder of a Royal Warrant. The company consolidated its position through acquisitions. Asprey was recognised for its expertise when it won a gold medal for its dressing cases at the International Exhibition of 1862 but lost out to its rivals, H.J. The main competitors at the time were H.J. Asprey crafted traditional cases and designs, mostly in leather, suitable for the new style of travel ushered in by railways. In 1847 the family broke with this partner and moved into 167 New Bond Street, the premises Asprey occupies today.įrom its central London location Asprey advertised 'articles of exclusive design and high quality, whether for personal adornment or personal accompaniment and to endow with richness and beauty the table and homes of people of refinement and discernment.' An early speciality was dressing cases. In 1841, William Asprey's elder son Charles went into partnership with a stationer located on London's Bond Street. This is a superb antique gilt bronze and agate mounted casket by Asprey, Circa 1870 in date. The lustrous, fine-grained, usually figured wood is used for furniture, cabinetwork, veneers, and backs of brushes. East Indian or Ceylon satinwood is the yellowish or dark-brown heartwood of Chloroxylon swietenia. It comes from two tropical trees of the family Rutaceae (rue family). ![]() Is a hard and durable wood with a satinlike sheen, much used in cabinetmaking, especially in marquetry. ![]() It also has a tendency to blunt the tools due to its abrasive properties. It turns well but due to its density and hardness can be difficult to work with hand tools. The wood is very dense and hard and can be brought to a spectacular finish. Occasionally it contains pale streaks of a similar colour to sapwood. It is brownish-purple with many fine darker stripes and occasional irregular swirls. Occasionally it is used in the solid for small items and turned work, including parts of billiard cues, e.g., those made by John Parris. Is a Classic furniture wood, almost exclusively used for inlays on very fine furniture. This strong box is in good untouched condition.Ī strongbox or strong box is a sturdy box with a lock for storing valuables. The strong box has iron rods that are vertically positioned in the side panels and can be screwed onto the wooden floor of a ship or carriage when travelling. The locking mechanism works excellently and the strongbox is ready to store your most precious valuables. The divider between the two drawers also contains a smaller secret compartment, adding extra interest and fascination to this spectacular box. The front fall drops down allowing access to the two useful drawers and two additional secret drawers. The sturdy hinged satinwood banded lid opens to reveal two distinctive recessed compartments inside the lid itself for holding documents. Using a key the front panel can be unlocked and when the lid is lifted, one gets access to the main storage space. The elaborate fittings should prevent the box from damage during long travels.Ĭentrally there is a large escutcheon, that can be opened with a secret lever. It has a pair of elaborate ormolu handles so that the box can easily be moved and they feature stunning floral, foliate decoration as well as a putto's head motif. This splendid large strongbox is rectangular in shape and features impressive gilt bronze strapwork throughout.
